Scuola dei Calegheri

The Scuola dei Calegheri in Venice.

My local library is housed in a delightful 15th century building, which once belonged to the Scuola dei Calegheri (shoemakers). There is a beautiful relief over the entrance and the walls are decorated with the remains of frescoes from the 15th or 16th century.

In the middle of last month we were informed that, owing to a shortage of funds, the library would no longer be in a position to stock daily newspapers. This latest cutback came closely on the heels of it announcing shorter opening hours.

The library is just one of the many casualties of the financial mess which is modern day Venice. If a city which attracts more than 20 million visitors each year cannot properly fund a small local library, something must be seriously wrong with the way it is being managed!
